Asymmetric flows of viscoelastic fluids in symmetric planar expansion geometries

چکیده
The flow of viscoelastic liquids with constant shear viscosity through symmetric sudden expansions is studied by numerical means. The geometry considered is planar and the constitutive model follows the modified FENE-CR equation, valid for relative dilute solutions of polymeric fluids. For Newtonian liquids in a 1:3 expansion we predict the result that the flow becomes asymmetric for a Reynolds number (based on upstream mean velocity and channel height) of about 54, in agreement with previously published results. For the non-Newtonian case the transition depends on both the concentration and the extensibility parameters of the model, and the trend is for the pitch-fork bifurcation to occur at higher Reynolds numbers. Detailed simulations are carried out for increasing Reynolds number, at fixed concentration and Weissenberg number, and for increasing concentration at a fixed Reynolds number of 60. The results given comprise size and strength of the recirculation zones, bifurcation diagrams, and streamline plots. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Traveling Waves of Some Symmetric Planar Flows of Non-Newtonian Fluids
We present some variants of Burgers-type equations for incompressible and isothermal planar flow of viscous non-Newtonian fluids based on the Cross, the Carreau and the power-law rheology models, and on a symmetry assumption on the flow. We numerically solve the associated traveling wave equations by using industrial data and in order to validate the models we prove existence and uniqueness of ...

A recently-developed microfluidic device, the optimized shape cross-slot extensional rheometer, or OSCER [S.J. Haward, M.S.N. Oliveira, M.A. Alves and G.H. McKinley, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 128301 (2012)], is used to investigate the stability of viscoelastic polymer solutions in an idealized planar stagnation point flow. Aqueous polymer solutions, consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) and of hyaluro...

We examine the flow of viscoelastic fluids with various shear and elongational properties in axisymmetric and planar 4:1 contractions, under creeping flow conditions. Particular attention is paid to the influence of elongational viscosity upon vortex enhancement/inhibition. Simulations are performed with a novel hybrid finite volume/element algorithm. The momentum and continuity equations are s...

متن کاملExcess pressure-drop estimation in contraction and expansion flows for constant viscosity, strain-hardening fluids
This article addresses the issue of reproducing quantitative pressure-drop predictions for constant shear-viscosity fluids in contraction and contraction/expansion flow geometries. Experimental observations on pressure-drop for severe strain-hardening Boger fluids reveal significant enhancement above Newtonian fluids in axisymmetric but not planar configurations. This discrepancy has eluded pre...
